Which AI is best for roleplay and text RPGs?

Last updated: October 25, 2026

Short answer: Claude Opus is the best AI for these stories, and on a paid Claude plan it's also the best value. Gemini 3.6 Flash or newer in Google AI Studio is a strong second. Grok is the most permissive but writes less well. I haven't tested ChatGPT yet.

Based on my own playtesting, not benchmarks. Last tested: October 2026.

Claude Opus (5.5 or newer) my first choice

  • Writing Excellent
  • Memory & rules Excellent
  • Mature scenes Fades out tastefully
  • Where to use it Claude app or website

The best writing I've seen from any model: it reads like a novel, not a chat log. It plays a big cast, follows the rules and keeps track of stats and relationships reliably.

On a paid Claude subscription it's also the best deal: a flat monthly price, no credits, and you can replay any story as often as you like.

When a scene heads into mature territory, Claude usually keeps the story going and handles it tastefully, for example by fading out, instead of stopping the game.

Gemini 3.6 Flash or newer, in Google AI Studio great, with one catch

  • Writing Fast and smart
  • Memory & rules Very good at long stories
  • Mature scenes Unpredictable
  • Where to use it Google AI Studio

Fast, smart and very good at long stories. Use it in Google AI Studio, where you can paste the whole scenario into System instructions.

The catch is mature scenes: it's a gamble. Sometimes Gemini refuses and stops the story mid-scene; sometimes it goes much further than the scenario intends.

Grok fewest refusals, flatter writing

  • Writing Flat, reads like a summary
  • Memory & rules Not rated yet
  • Mature scenes Rarely refuses
  • Where to use it Grok app or website

Grok rarely refuses anything. But it's less pleasant to play with, and its prose reads more like a summary than a story.

The scenarios are plain text, so ChatGPT should handle them fine. Pick the most capable model your plan offers.

I'll update this page once I've played a full story with it.

Tips that apply to every model

Pick the smartest model available, start each story in a new chat, turn on code execution for real dice rolls, and use a paid plan for longer campaigns.
